I’ve often met situation where my friends complained to me that the Microsoft Office 2007 automatically “upgraded” their Microsoft Office 2003 without seeking their permission. It’s not a bad thing to have something new and nice to play with. Afterall Microsoft Office 2003 has been around for “ages”, it’s boring to keep looking at it. I personally preferred something new and fresh. As for some, they preferred things that “just work”.

Microsoft Office 2007

Anyway, the biggest reason why people wanted to continue to stick to their Microsoft Office 2003 is because of the recent makeover of the Office File Format. They called it, OpenXML. If you happen to be using the new Office, all the Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint files ends with an extra “x” to their extension, i.e. (*.docx, *.xlsx, *.pptx). So it’s frustrating that you have to always remembered to Save As (*.doc, *.xls, *.ppt) because the rest of the world aren’t using Office 2007 yet.

Another reason to change is the reading capability of Office 2003 files aren’t 100% accurate. Most of the problems are due to the alignment issue, not the content problem. All the contents will load properly but at times, you will find that the information are everywhere inside the document. You will feel the frustration, especially when you are “running against the time”. I felt it too.

Hence, today, I’m going to show you a very simple step on how to have both Microsoft Office 2003 and Microsoft Office 2007. It’s so simple that even a 12 year-old kid can do it. So listen carefully…

Install Office 2007 first then followed by Office 2003.

Surprise. Lol . 😀

Update: Just my mistake, I think my friend updated me that it can be done the other way round through clicking on customize instead of upgrade. Less obvious.

nope. the other way round, the Office 2007 will “erase” the Office 2003.

It is possible to do it the other way round as i understand it the key option is when installing Office 2007 is to customise the options and select to NOT uninstall the previous versions.

None of these things help. The truth is, if you install 2003 first then install 2007 AND customize it to let you keep 2003 it will still delete 2003 on reboot. FURTHERMORE…given that 2007 is so weird and screwy, I still prefer to have 2003 as my default. Microsoft Vista WILL NOT LET YOU DO THAT EITHER. In the MS Office Directories for 2007 and 2003 Word, PowerPoint and Excel have the same naming convention for both versions. Stupid Vista does not recongnize any difference between the two versions of the programs even though the are located in two completely different directories, so even if you choos MS Office 2003 (Word, Excel & PowerPoint) as your default programs when you launch from a file, VISTA and 2007 conspire to force you to use 2007. Only way I’ve found around it is to change the names of the .EXE files in 2003 and then designate them as defaults. BUT when you do that, you lose some major features. If anyone knows how to over ride this stupid ridiculous flaw that crappy horrible Vista has force on us, please let me/us know.
